As I was wandering around packing this morning I noticed how intentional and methodical I was being in preparing for my 3 day trip to the states. My mind was calmly busy scanning over each day away anticipating the tasks and mentally checking off the items I need for each portion. Formal wear for the wedding, relaxing in the hotel room and moving from rainy sweater weather to sweltering summer sun.

As I was noticing my process and realizing the power of calm preparation, I intuitively looked at where else this skill had been exercised in my life and where else I could apply it.

Preparation is not a new skill for me. It is a natural strength of mine when it comes to work or projects. It was honed when I chose systems analysis as a field of study in college. In my everyday personal life however, I tend to lean toward chaos. Makes me smile. I have a tendency to flit around touching this and that and eventually things get finished but lots are in some sort of partial disarray.

I began to “try on” what my life would be like if I were to approach each day with the same focus and detailed attention that I applied to packing for my trip. Thinking of the day and setting the goals I hoped to accomplish. Separating the “must do’s” from the “want to’s” ensuring a balance of “have to’s” and “like to’s” to make certain I am in harmony. Taking the time to settle my spirit in preparation for facing potential trials or upsets of the day.

As I was contemplating and running scenarios I felt my anxiety relaxing and my body being energized like it always does when I start putting a plan together. Mentally I am so much stronger because I no longer have to keep a thousand “what if” strategies alive and current in my mind.

The genesis of a personal DMO (daily method of operation) has happened and now I will nurture it to maturity and have a beautiful nourishing foundation on which to build my life one day at a time. How wonderful is this? Happy smile.
